Earlier versions, kept for you
When a document in a protected folder changes, XiVault keeps the earlier version. Versions are compressed, so they stay small on disk.
XiVault Beta
XiVault keeps earlier versions of the documents in the folders you choose, compressed and small on disk, on your own PC. Browse them, restore any version, or bring a whole folder back to how it was at an earlier moment.
What XiVault does
When a document in a protected folder changes, XiVault keeps the earlier version. Versions are compressed, so they stay small on disk.
Pick a file, see its saved versions with their dates and restore the one you want. XiVault checks that the restored file matches the saved version before it replaces anything.
See a folder as it was at an earlier moment and bring it back to that point, instead of restoring files one by one.
Files that were deleted or moved out of a protected folder are listed on their own page, with their versions, so you can bring them back.
If files were encrypted or overwritten, restore the versions saved before the damage. Only versions XiVault kept before that moment can come back.
Versions are kept on this PC. Nothing is uploaded: there is no cloud and no account. Copying the vault to your own NAS, server or database is coming; the settings exist, the copy itself is not built yet.
Expect rough edges and changes. Try it on copies of your documents first, and keep your normal backup.
Versions are kept on the same PC. They do not help if the disk fails or the PC is lost or stolen. A copy to your own storage is coming; until then, keep a separate backup.
XiVault can restore only versions it saved. Changes from before you installed it, or files outside your protected folders, have no history. It trims the oldest versions over time so it does not fill your disk.
XiVault helps you recover documents. It does not detect or remove malware. Microsoft Defender stays on as your real-time antivirus.
This is the Beta release of XiVault, not the final release yet. The Windows installers are signed with XiGuard’s own code-signing certificate, not one from a public certificate authority, so Windows may warn you before they run. The Mac builds are not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first time you open the app.
For most PCs. This installer also runs on Windows on ARM (emulated), if you prefer it.

Open the file you downloaded.
Windows may show “Windows protected your PC” (SmartScreen), because the installer is not signed with a certificate from a public certificate authority. Choose “More info”, then “Run anyway”.
On first start, XiVault asks which folders to protect. It keeps versions of the documents in those folders.
XiVault then asks where to keep its key backup. The default is Documents\XiVault Key Backup; a USB stick or another drive is better. Without this backup, the file names in the vault cannot be read if the PC is lost.
